Kaal Sarp dosh: what it is, and what it isn't
All seven classical planets falling on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. It is a pattern, it is uncommon, and the fear attached to it is almost entirely modern.
The pattern
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they cut the chart into two halves. Kaal Sarp is the configuration where the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all fall within one of those halves — nothing at all on the other side. Traditions differ on the details: whether a planet exactly on the axis counts, and whether the arrangement must run from Rahu to Ketu in zodiacal order. Those differences change the answer, which is worth knowing before anyone pronounces on your chart.
Where the fear came from
This is the honest part, and it is the reason this page exists. Kaal Sarp has little presence in the classical literature — it is not in the core texts the way Vimshottari dasha or the Ashtakoot system are. It became prominent recently, and it became prominent largely because it sells: it is dramatic, it is easy to explain, and there is a ritual available for it at a price.
We would rather tell you that than imply an ancient authority that is not there.
How it is reasonably read
Where it is used seriously, it is read as a life with an unusual concentration of emphasis — intense in some areas, oddly empty in others — and often as late recognition rather than denied recognition. Which half the planets occupy, and which houses, changes the reading completely. Many people with this pattern have entirely ordinary lives, and some have notably successful ones.
