Mangal dosha (“Manglik”): what it means
Mars in certain houses of your chart. It is a factor astrologers weigh in a marriage match. It is not a defect in a person, and it is not a reason to call off a wedding on its own.
The actual definition
A chart is traditionally called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Which houses count varies between traditions — some exclude the 2nd, some count from the Moon or the Ascendant rather than both — and that variation matters, because it means two honest astrologers can reach different answers about the same chart. Anyone who tells you there is one unarguable answer is overstating the tradition.
Mars is read as heat, drive and friction. The houses in the list are the ones concerning self, home, partnership and loss, so the traditional concern is about temper and friction inside a marriage — not about catastrophe.
Why it frightens people more than it should
Because of how it is usually delivered. Said as “you are Manglik”, it sounds like a diagnosis. In the texts it is one weighting among many, and the same texts list a long set of conditions under which it is considered cancelled — when Mars is in its own or exalted sign, when both charts carry it, when Mars is aspected by Jupiter, and several others depending on the tradition. A competent match reading reaches those cancellations before it reaches a conclusion.
