Sade Sati: what it actually is
Saturn passing through three signs around your Moon — about seven and a half years. It is a demanding period in the traditional reading. It is not a curse, and nothing you buy will shorten it.
The mechanics, which are not mysterious
Saturn takes roughly 29½ years to go round the zodiac, so it spends about two and a half years in each sign. Sade Sati is the stretch when it transits the 12th, the 1st and the 2nd sign counted from your Moon sign. Three signs at two and a half years each is seven and a half — sade sat, three and a half plus four, which is where the name comes from.
Two things follow from that. First, it is counted from your Moon sign, not your Sun sign, so most people who look it up online are checking the wrong sign. Second, it happens to everyone, roughly every 27 to 30 years. It is a phase of a cycle, not a verdict on you.
What the tradition actually says about it
Classical texts read Saturn as the planet of time, limit and consequence, and this transit as the period when those arrive. Astrologers traditionally associate it with hard work with delayed reward, with responsibility landing earlier than wanted, with tiredness, and with a narrowing of life to what actually matters. Many people describe the years afterwards as the most solid of their lives, built on what the period forced them to take seriously.
The three phases are usually read differently: the first (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon) as expense, sleep and letting go; the second (over the Moon itself) as the heaviest emotionally; the third (the 2nd from the Moon) as money and family, and as the phase where the ground starts to firm up.
